I just got my hands on a song from the upcoming Protest the Hero album “Fortress” (Jan. 29th… supposedly. But it hasn’t leaked yet!?), titled “Bloodmeat”. I’m not sure if this is a single, or I’m just that awesome, but it’s definitely a legitimate (and new) song by them. So here’s a review.
Lyrics/Vocals
As with all Protest the Hero songs, the lyrics are very weird and odd. But this time around these are more anthemic than ever before, with even more vocal range. From growls to the typical “Protest voice” to tones reminiscent of glam rock, definitely an improvement over “Kezia”.
Guitars
If you’re reading this, then you probably know that listening to any song by “Protest the Hero” results in a combination of progressive rock, metal, and rock being slammed into your ears. This time around is no different. Except that it appears they’ve come to love their trademark sound even more (combining demonic dissonance with catchy and memorable riffs), and have decided to include more riffs-per-song than before… rivaling the dynamicism of Dream Theater.
Song Structure
Like I just mentioned, the song structure follows their usual patterns: no pattern. But there is a discernable pattern that includes chorus, verse, riff-not-breakdown, and breakdown. Other than saying it’s more complicated than what they’ve written before, there’s really nothing else.
Overall Sound
I love it. I really do. By the end of this song, I get goosebumps. As a big fan of the band, I was hoping this would be an improvement from the last record (more of the same), unlike other bands of recent past (Trivium or A7X anyone?)… and this album appears to be exactly what I hoped. This is only one song, but knowing that the album is going to be tightly written with the same backing idea for each song… I’m pretty sure this is a good sampling of the upcoming release.
In fact… I love it so much, I’ve made it so you can listen to it.
