A Letter to Orson Scott Card

I just finished re-reading the entire “Enderverse” books, and tracked down a way to email him a letter to express some thoughts and feelings I have on the worlds he created for us.  Here it is, unedited:

Mr. Orson Scott Card,

I know you probably get letters/emails like this alot, but I wanted to write to you to express how deeply your books have effected me, and some thoughts I have on them.

More specifically, I’m talking about the “Enderverse” books.  I first read “Ender’s Game” in the 3rd grade (I’m now 20yrs. old), and can remember how I associated with it closely then.  I was getting into SciFi/Fantasy at this point (Heinlein, Asimov, Niven, Tolkien, etc.), and found the book in the library… I consider it to be a pivotal book in my life:  I have re-read it many times, and typically at times of great stress or emotional duress.

I didn’t discover the resulting sequels until about 2 years ago, but quickly powered through (and loved) them.  However, I tend to relate more to (and enjoy more) the “true” sequels revolving around Bean, rather than the +3000yr. sequels, and this brings me to my point.

You mentioned in one of the introductions to the books that you at some point realized there was an opportunity for further exploration in the “Enderverse” stories since you created a 3000yr gap, and I think that you did a wonderful job.  Even though some of the books are more political and less “light” than “Ender’s Shadow” or “Ender’s Game”, they are every bit as enjoyable.  Characters were never forgotten, and seemingly side-characters (from the original books) were turned into pivotal ones… a true stroke of genius.  You covered all the bases, and provided a more-than-satisfactory story for “what happens after?”.

My only complaint is that it ended.  Granted, some authors extend their series much longer than it ever should be (not to point fingers, but the “Redwall” books are a good example)… but I think yours was just a book or two short.  The ending of “Shadow of a Giant” seems to be an “Ok, I’m done let’s tie everything together” ending, much like the third movie of the “Lord of the Rings” series.

That being said, it’s written, and to go back on it would be (in my opinion) one of the cardinal sins of authorship:  changing major parts of the storyline to squeeze in a few more books.  I did find a way for you to create more stories in this universe, and I’m sure you’ve already realized it, but I feel the need to share it… you have two options:

1)  Bean and his giant-children. You tell us that they go out in space, searching for worlds and never expecting to return to humanity… but there is no definitive end of their story.  I find it also interesting that in “Children of the Mind”, Jane and Miro are searching for new worlds.  This presents an obvious tie-in, but even if it’s ignored, there is a chance for development in this line.  Do Bean’s children found a world of their own that has exactly what was described:  a race of fast-developing children, that live fast and die young?  Or do they return to Earth after a cure is found?

2)  Young Ender. You follow Bean, almost exclusively, through the series… the only times we meet Ender are in “Ender’s Game” and the later +3000-yr sequels.  There is still a substantial gap between leaving Earth, or even Peter’s death, and the next time we meet them on Trondheim.  Yes, we know Valentine and Ender wrote alot, that they skipped planets, and talked about dead people… but don’t you feel that is very anti-climactic for such an epic hero (or, anti-hero depending on the position of the timeline)?  How about a deeper relationship between Jane and Ender?  We’re introduced, and teased, with such a relationship in “Speaker for the Dead”… but then Jane moves on and becomes a semi-side character with Miro.

You’ll have to forgive me, as I just finished re-reading every book in the entire “Enderverse”, so the details are fresh in my mind… as is the passion for them.  I have read your “Homecoming” books, and they’re enjoyable… but not as easy to relate to, or as touching.  They are even more distant from a reader-book connection than the Speaker/Xenocide/Children books.  I’ve thought about reading some of your other books, but nothing seems to stand up to the greatness of the Ender/Bean classics, especially since I’m not religious (a “non-believer” even) and would have a hard time reading some of the others.  (To be fair, I have “Empire” and “The Worthing Saga” to read yet)

I know this is long, so I’m going to wrap it up, but the basic premise of this letter is “the Enderverse books truly resonated with me, and helped me through some very rough times.  They are among some of the most loved and revered books in all of Science Fiction… I believe I speak for all of your fans when I ask that you please do not give up on this wonderful world you’ve created for us, and continue writing about Bean, young Ender, or some other modulation of that universe”.

Thanks for everything,
Kyle Brady

Don’t be too harsh with me.

AT&T Not “Traffic Shaping”? Right.

Take a look at these screenshots.

Screen 1:  downloading a torrent for tonight’s Scrubs.  The source doesn’t matter, since there are both legal and illegal sources for this kind of content.  Download speed, via test, is 661Kbps, and the torrent is at a crawl.  Web pages and uploading things via SSH to a server take forever.

Screen 2:  all torrents now paused.  Download speed, via test is 2.2Mbps.  Everything is fast and quick.

This has been happening over the last week, maybe week and a half.  Never a problem before, but if I have a torrent active, even a simple thing like using SSH via command line becomes difficult and very “laggy”.

What the hell?  I left Comcast because they sucked at life (bad customer service, traffic shaping, lies, etc.), and now AT&T is starting to do something that’s highly decried as a “major no-no” in the public eye?

Great.  Thanks, assholes.

Edit: just for the record, I’m on “AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet Pro”.  It’s a DSL dryloop plan.

Update (4/24/08 1AM PST): I called AT&T, got forwarded to a nonsense number, and then called back.  There was no record of me calling, no trouble tickets.  Because that’s not suspicious.

Update (4/24/08 1:40AM PST): “Call back tomorrow when our Line Department is open, it’s probably an issue with your line.”  Got a ticket number this time, but the SOB Manager wouldn’t give me his full name (”Chris” was definitely not part of it, that’s for sure) or a direct number to that department.  We’ll see what happens in a few hours.

Update (4/30/08 2:00PM PST): I sent off a few emails to different departments at AT&T, linking to this with a “this is bullshit, fix it or I’m leaving your service immediately” message.  In every case, I either got “this isn’t our department’s problem” or “we have determined this not to be an issue” in response.  I haven’t called back yet, because I wanted to see what would happen… the results?  My bandwidth is not being capped as much as before, since I now get about 60% of the promised speed if a torrent is involved.

This obviously didn’t just happen on it’s own, but I find it interesting nonetheless.  However, it’s not completely fixed yet, so I’m not giving up on this issue… I wonder what department fixed this, and why they did if it wasn’t “an issue” or their “problem”…

Update (9/23/08 7:30pm PST): I stopped downloading things for the last two months or so, in the hope that whatever they’ve flagged my account with disappears.  It didn’t.

I’m still dealing with bandwidth caps when torrents are connected, and getting the run-around from anyone who bothers to talk with me about it from on high.  And yet, they claim to be “down” with P2P.

I’m calling “shenanigans” on this one.

LiveNation = Fuck You

I go to alot of concerts, that’s nothing new. And I usually buy through LiveNation, because they’re cheaper than Ticketmaster, and more reputable than those other random ticket sites that have the design and functionality as if a 4-yr old had made them.

But then I go to pick up a ticket for the “Rockstar Energy Mayhem Tour” for July, and what do I find? Oh nothing, except A GIANT BALL OF ANGRY.

[click for full explanation]

I can understand a parking fee, since it’s at a stadium of sorts… but explain this to me:

How the HELL is a “convenience fee” and an “order fee” GOD DAMN APPROPRIATE when the tickets are ordered through the FUCKING INTERNET? And what makes this one different from all the other tickets I’ve bought that haven’t nearly DOUBLED in price because of “FEES“?

The system behind these ticketing places is a program. Not a bunch of fucking little lawn gnomes running around filling requests. So how much does it cost you to process a ticket purchase? Very little. And how much does it cost you to mail it to me? A couple pennies (at most), plus the cost of whatever the hell a stamp is at the moment. How much of that ticket goes to the venue and the artists? Maybe 75%?

You’re making 25% of the ticket cost, plus another 40% of the ticket price in fees? Is it too much to ask you not to make obscene profit margins, when it, once again, costs you very little?

No? I’m sorry, I didn’t realize I was financing the re-growth of Communist Fucking Russia, you stupid pompous assholes.

edit: I decided to send this to LiveNation’s customer service. In case you’re curious (for things like, I don’t know, sending similar messages), my reference number for the “case” is: 080419-000125. To complain go here, and click “Ask a Question”. My title was “Do you enjoy rape?”…

Awkward Times

A friend of mine from the East Coast (we’ll call him “Jenga”) got an IM from a girl that we both dated a very long time ago (early highschool), him a few weeks after I dropped her like a burning monkey.

Having no idea who she was, he at least pretended to talk to her at first, hoping that it was some model-quality girl from his school.

Here’s a perfect example why most “exes” should never be talked to again. Pay close attention to the timestamps. And, yes, it’s the real unedited convo… he emailed it to me.

UglyGirl (12:00:13 AM): who is this?
JengaMan (12:00:30 AM): who is this?
UglyGirl (12:00:43 AM): frankie……

ClassicallyAwesome, Postponed

Over the last 2.5 weeks, I’ve been experimenting with producing an online comic (you’ve probably already noticed).  I’ve really enjoyed an outlet for my weird sense of humor, and have gotten mixed responses, as well as some pretty big traffic spikes.

But I’ve kind of put myself into a corner for the moment, where many different things are converging.  I can’t really disclose full details at the moment, but it’s safe to say that I’m not going to be back at the webcomic game until at least mid-May, and at the latest, early June.

This has nothing to do with any of the number of violently verbal attacks on my insanity, and in fact those are much more appreciated than the positive feedback… it makes me laugh, knowing that I bothered someone with my “creativity”.  Like I’ve said, this has everything to do with the end of my last semester at school (by choice, not by graduation), the looming deadline for a real-world life, Intuitive Industries, OneSwirl, and a small handful of other things.

I’ll keep blogging at random, and may even spit some code out on here tomorrow… but no comics for awhile.

“Slayer <3’s Jesus”

I made a new sign this morning for the back window of my car… I think it’s hilarious.

This is replacing “I CAN HAZ UR SOUL?” [no picture].

Some Updates

As usual, been pretty busy. Here’s some brief updates:

  • I’m sure you’ve noticed, but in the last week and a half (or so), I’ve started a new webcomic, ClassicallyAwesome. It’s a little weird, because it’s my sense of humor, but I think it’s funny! I started doing it because I had some ideas for comics, and just thought I’d see where it went. I’ve figured out how to actually plan them, and what the “feel” is going to be like, so they’ll be a little more in the same vein from now on… the computer thing was a little tangential.
  • I hit almost 1000 unique visitors yesterday. The traffic’s been escalating every day for the last 4 or 5 days, all because of my comedic…”talents”. Tell your friends!
  • Just because I’m doing a webcomic now doesn’t mean I stopped everything else. Development on OneSwirl is continuing at a pretty intense pace, but for the next release not all of the programming feats will be visible to users. Alot of it is backend re-programming (PHP to C++) since we switched to more…capable…servers. But, there are some cool things we’re doing… stay tuned!
  • We’re still looking for someone who can do some quick (and cheap) work for us in C/C++. If you’re interested, email me.
  • Finally, the big item: this is my last semester at school. The reasons why are complicated, but the end result is that I’m calling it quits with college. My immediate future is still TBD, but there’s a few options I can’t talk about at the moment.
