Self:

A Young Republican’s Personal Crisis of Party

subscribe to Self posts:  rss - email

I'm having major issues with my official political party, and I emailed my Uncle about it, who's pretty insightful on alot of topics, especially politics.

I thought what I ended up describing probably fits alot of other "I'm sorry I'm a Republican"-Republicans right now, and so I've posted it for general consumption, slightly edited of course.
As you may or may not know, I voted for Obama in the general election.  Not because I believe we need nationalized healthcare, or any of the other radical things he wanted to do that will now likely not happen (if they even would have in the first place), but because I think America needed a change in leadership, radically different, to help rebuild our country's world image, and deal with some major issues so far ignored.

Anyways, I'd hoped that with Obama's entrance, Congress would be a little more like when Clinton was in office:  less about party politics, and more about getting things done for the country, which is what they're elected to do in the first place.  But, as we've seen, the Republicans, from the state-level up, are flat out opposing Obama on almost every issue, no matter what, and are now blaming him for things that THEIR PARTY caused... which they had no problem with during their own reign.

Now we have Limbaugh as the "voice of the party", and Jindal (or God forbid, Sarah Palin) as the "leader of the party" that is being looked to for a possible 2012.

To be honest, I'm about one more act of Republican stupidity from changing my party to Democrat.  No matter what you think of Obama's ideas, you can't argue that he hasn't tried, or that he hasn't done what he believes is the absolute best for the country.  I don't agree with the massive bailout of corporations who can't support themselves, let alone the banking mess (caused by previous deregulation... *cough*cough*), but I still believe Obama has the brains to pull us through, to be smart enough to invest in education, science, and research and not eschew it for psuedo-religious or pocket-lining reasons.

And yet the Republicans continue to be a party that caters to the "rich, white, God-fearing, southerner-to-the-heart" stereotype, and ignore reality.  I don't want to seem "haughty", but I don't feel that I can be associated with public figureheads who intentionally dumb themselves down, or are maybe that unintelligent to begin with, as some sort of party ideal - and continue with "business as usual" when their ideologies/methodologies are obviously not working.

So, not to make this email the length of a book, my major question is:  am I wrong?  I get information from different sources across the 'net, as well as outlets like CNN, so I'd like to think I've aggregated both sides of the story accurately.  How do you feel about what's going on right now, as a Republican?

I'm a true Republican to the heart... I believe in Defense spending and alot of the other classically conservative issues, and I'm also against alot of the so-called "hippie" ideals of the edge Democrats (nationalized healthcare, for one... it needs to be regulated, not run, by the government).

But this whole situation is making me embarrassed to be associated with any of them.

Update (7/1/2009 12:00am PST): I've long since changed parties to Democrat, but it's worth mentioning I'm more of a "moderate" than anything.

You're exactly the kind of Republican I want to work with. I'm a friggin liberal combat vet. War came, I put the bong down, got a haircut, and went to war. All I'm getting from Mullahs like Limbaugh, Coulter and Beck is a bunch of boomer based hatred, based on some caricature of a "liberal" that, not only have I never met, doesn't even seem to be present in this day and age. And frankly, just looking at the hate mail posted for Gingrey and Steele, once they criticized Limbaugh, has me wondering if the next terrorist attack won't come from disgruntled, and misinformed conservaitves. We need moderate Republicans now more than ever. Please keep writing!
  • Hi JD!

Glad to hear it. I agree with you on most of those points, actually.

I'm not sure I'd consider myself a "moderate" Republican (or what I'd call myself at all, to be honest), but I agree we need more people who value intelligence and thought over politiking and word-slinging.

Maybe I should run for President? What's that minimum age again? ;-)

I'll take your advice, and keep writing as I'd intended to, but I'm not sure how much of an influence I have...
