Daylight Misery, a five-piece death metal band from Germany, chose a fitting name for their band when they formed in 2008 – all of their influences cited are extremely dark, and they openly admit to “everything Dark / Melancholic and Depressive”. A perfect characterization.
Combining the melodic death metal sensibilities of bands like Insomnium and an operatic element that would occasionally make Dimmu Borgir jealous, Daylight Misery has emerged as a younger melodic death metal band that could help their few brethren to make this particular genre of metal more popular and widespread. Unlike Insomnium, Daylight Misery has only an EP in their catalog, but they have made very clear their intentions for genre, and, unlike many bands, will not need time to “find” themselves following a record deal.
At times uplifting and upbeat, this European quintet manages to communicate their self-proclaimed sorrows and misery without fervent aggression, over-the-top brutality, or even actually being depressing. The musical pain pushes through quite clearly, and it seems to be the combination of melodic guitar lines and the noticeably down-tempo pace that achieves this – all with vocals that are harsh and fitting, yet clear and unmistakable in meaning.
Daylight Misery is currently seeking a record label, but the search should not last long, as they have already achieved far more in terms of vision, quality, and overall production than many metal bands ever do in their brief careers. Any label that signs this evolution of a death metal band would be lucky to have them.
Daylight Misery can be found on MySpace, and their EP is available for download.
