Balancing the U.S. Budget in 2011

This is just a quick note to point out the Pew Budget Challenge, which lets you attempt to balance the U.S. budget, in light of the imminent failure of Congress' Supercommittee on this issue.

Not surprisingly, by making the following decisions, America can have a tiny debt-to-GDP ratio by 2021 and still be a world power:
  • leave Social Security, Medicaid/Medicare, etc. alone
  • raise taxes on the top brackets
  • raise/remedy taxes on corporations
  • slightly reduce Defense spending
  • create a public option for healthcare
  • hold states accountable for their own programs
  • finance the education of America's children
  • create a VAT and raise gasoline taxes
  • and more...
