First, there was the name change.  Then came the reassurance that science fiction would remain important to the network, despite wanting to appeal to larger audiences.  And now, a lie revealed.

John Twelve Hawks, a pseudonymous author of fiction, has quite a following behind his mysterious, novel-creating persona, resulting in not only “The Fourth Realm” trilogy of cyberpunk-meets-near-future-dystopia but also their upcoming film adaptations.  While JXIIH has been the subject of much controversy since his written-word debut, the scrutiny has increased substantially with the involvement of Hollywood:  who is John Twelve Hawks?

Any Americans that paid even remote attention to the recent 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver would know that NBC royally screwed up.  Skipping events, giving only selected highlights, delaying coverage until primetime, annoying commentators/voiceovers, a lack of Internet coverage – these are just some of the problems that plagued their television coverage, upsetting average citizens and Congressmen alike.  This is the moment of revolution.

The BBC is closing half its website and ridding itself of large portions of content, mostly related to music and entertainment, in a response to what they see as impending budgets cuts and a recognition of having expanded beyond their mission.  While this is logical, it points to a larger question:  what comes next?

With the future of the Terminator film franchise in question, it’s worth considering other options that would continue the multiple storylines within the canon without needing budgets that rival the deficits of some sovereign nations – especially for the fantastically written and wantonly canceled “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” television series.

I had an interesting discussion/argument today with a friend on Facebook about the iPhone’s usefulness, all because I posted a status update on how iPhone users are usually pretty annoying.  After that, it evolved into a discussion that’s worthy of some public attention, so here it is in anonymized format, posted with permission.

Take a look at what happened to the revenue stream of newspapers, magazines, and television over the last few years, and then consider how the majority of non-personal, non-commercial websites manage to keep their heads above water.  It’s easy to imagine that the same incomeocalypse could apply to the digital version of the same industries:  the death of advertising.

Google Buzz, Google Buzz, Google Buzz – the Internet is very, very excited at the moment about the latest software release from Google, and for good reason.  Unlike the underwhelming Google Wave product, this may be, for lack of a better and less overused word, a “gamechanger”.

In various publications, slamming the Internet, technology, and multi-tasking has become a favorite habit, and Frontline: Digital Nation (PBS) is no exception.  Simultaneously slamming technology as the culprit of memory loss, decreased productivity, social problems, lifestyle problems, and the general degradation of humanity, such programs overlook the obvious: technology, and specifically the Internet, is much more about evolution as a species than a brain-destroying side attraction.

For as long as space has been explored by humans, NASA has existed at its very center as the de facto agency for transportation, innovation, and exploration, but its mission has changed, and it is no longer what it used to be; however, this is a boon to both private industry and the future of humanity.
