New to the site? Welcome!

You might be interested to know that there's two different kind of posts on this blog: "Thought of the Day" and "Normal". The "Thought of the Day" category is a once-a-day random tidbit, usually a funny video or picture, and the "Normal" is just what you'd expect from a blog like this:

Unicorn-Butterfly Soup.

Announcing a New Artist for “Jayde Wartear”

If you’ve been around here for awhile, you know that I’m working on a comic book collaboration project called “Jayde Wartear”… but if not, check out the history and some samples.

This time I’ve gone with the true comic art format:  individual people for the separate art pieces.  What does this mean?  Well, the previous artist (Gabe) was an all-inclusive kind of guy, but he didn’t work out as expected.  Obviously.

So, my new artist is a “Penciller”.  A Penciller is the person who does what it sounds like… does the actual drawings, and other people add the color, lines, letters, etc.

Who is this new artist?

Dorothy T. Rose, from Arkansas.  Check out her DeviantArt profiles [1] [2] and her personal page.

Here’s an early pre-viz of what Jayde will look like under Dorothy’s talents:

The end result will probably be a mix of both of those visualizations, but with considerably less “cowboy” and “effeminate” characteristics.

Ender’s Game… The Comic Series

In case you hadn’t noticed, I’m a huge fan of Ender’s Game.  And Orson Scott Card.  As long as it’s not the Homecoming series.

They’re apparently making a movie, but OSC is taking his time to write the script to be perfect.  Since alot of the book takes place inside Ender’s head as thoughts or inner dialogue, that obviously wouldn’t translate well to a viewing audience.  So the movie’s going to be awhile.

It’s kind of like my Bible.

But imagine my surprise when I realized that a comic book series is coming out, based on the novels.

Fantastic!  I usually don’t buy single comics (I prefer the trade books), but I’m definitely picking these up as they come out.

I’m just that much of a fan.

“The Origin of the CD-Keys”

I follow some pretty random webcomics, but don’t talk about them very much… this is an exception.

There’s been alot of talk recently about DRM as a concept (be it CD keys or Apple’s Music Licensing), and Penny Arcade put together a pretty good panel series about how it started and where it is now.

See, it’s funny because it’s true.

Jayde Wartear- Disaster Falling

Remember my comic book project, Jayde Wartear?

Yeah.

Gabe randomly flaked on me, saying he “couldn’t get into the character”, but hadn’t bothered to read what I had sent him for the first two chapters (issues).  Did the very first issue of Batman encapsulate his persona and story perfectly, or explain everything?  No.  And I don’t see this as being any different.

So I’ve decided to post the first 4 pages of art that I have from him, since they were “final” versions- ready for text and things.  I’m once again looking for an artist in the same “dark and brooding” vein, but not necessarily the same style as this.

Even if nothing comes through, I’m going to finish writing this and maybe try and shop it around to people as a whole unit, but we’ll see.

“Jayde Wartear” - A Sneak Peek

I’ve been working with Gabe-the-Artist alot recently on Jayde Wartear, and even written two full scripts, now working on the third.  In the meantime, we’re getting ready to start work on Chapter 1 of Book 1… basically Issue #1.

Here’s a sneak peek:

Comic Book Update

It’s official:  I found an artist to work with me on my comic book project- Gabe Thomas out of Peoria, Illinois.  Gabe’s DeviantArt page shows some of his past work, but it’s only slightly similar to what we’re doing… different style.

I just finished scripting “Chapter 1″, and we’re tidying up some legal issues at the moment… but more info coming soon!

Bonus:  the main character (and the series) is called “Jayde Wartear”, and here’s a very early look at what he looks like:

Comic Book Idea

I’ve had an idea for a comic book series that would be written and produced as if it were a “real” comic book… but would be launched and displayed via a slick site.

Anyways, I’m looking for people who’d be interested:  artists, inkers, writers, etc.  And I’m talking about American style art, especially the darker side (think Jim Lee’s Batman mixed with the grit and flash of the 300 movie)

Ideally you’d do all your work digitally and be in the Bay Area… but not necessarily.

Email me if you’re interested.  Make sure to include examples of your work so I can weed through the trash!

“Cyanide and Happiness” Fun

I’ve recently discovered “Cyanide and Happiness” (a web comic), and have been slowly churning through the archives (I’m up to January 2008!). Here’s some of my favorites:

Programming Wonders

I’m not a Python fan, but vary rarely can the joys and simple things of programming be easily expressed:
