New to the site? Welcome!

You might be interested to know that there's two different kind of posts on this blog: "Thought of the Day" and "Normal". The "Thought of the Day" category is a once-a-day random tidbit, usually a funny video or picture, and the "Normal" is just what you'd expect from a blog like this:

Unicorn-Butterfly Soup.

p.s. the subscription options to the left (psst! <---- that way) reflect the same content options

Feed Advertising

I’m experimenting with feed-based advertising via Google Adsense, using the very easy to use connection between the new Feedburner (invite only at this point) and Google Adsense.

We’ll see how it goes and what it does to the feeds, but let me know what you think.

October Highs

October (last month, for all you droolheads) saw alot of new records for this-here blog:

  • 3,500 unique visitors
    • Previously ranged from 200 - 2000, excepting the July Valleywag spike
  • feed subscribers doubling
    • Exact numbers are a state secret
  • “Best of 4chan and/b/” was the … best … archive page
    • 618 unique visitors
    • 1,286 total visits
    • The numbers continued on, but slightly lower, for the sequential pages of the tag
  • the “Alien In Real Life” post was the best actual post
    • What?  This was written a year ago, and isn’t even very good.
    • Nor is it relevant.
    • But it still had 472 unique visitors
    • 610 total visits

The proof is in the daily-unique-visitors-pudding, Neo.

The other weird thing?  I’ve been getting alot of hotlinking of my images (hence the new supersexy plugin on the site to try and fool hotlinkers)… and some images show up on the first page of Google Images.  Random things like “Avenged Sevenfold”, “Neverending Story”, and lots more.

So I guess the quick version is “Thanks, /b/rothers!  You drove my traffic up pretty high!”

Subscription Management

“Hello” to all the new subscribers, and everyone else too!

This is for them.  Site-readers, you can ignore this.

I’ve recently been ported from FeedBurner -> Google FeedBurner, which means a change in RSS and Email Subscription locations.

They’re going to continue to have dual locations of everything for awhile to come, and potentially indefinitely, but it would be best to use the new locations where possible.

Basically, if you use an RSS feed, please resubscribe using one of the same-but-new-URL options, and the same goes for email subscriptions.  By doing so, you’re not only guaranteeing your continued receipt of all my posts, but also that they’re on time, unlike the current FeedBurner system.

Thanks!

p.s. Don’t forget to unsubscribe from the original FeedBurner locations… otherwise my numbers get inflated!

Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes

I’m slowly morphing this site from “just some random blog” into something much larger, more organized, and just overall better.

The first step visible to the outside world just occured.  I have segregated my different “personas” on this blog into different feeds.

There are now three ways to follow this blog:

This way, if you don’t find my “Thought of the Day” series entertaining or amusing, you can follow only my “real” posts, which usually have substantial content behind them.  Or vice versa.

This change has also been affected in the sidebar menu, and the meta-data of the page itself.

More to come at some point, hopefully soon…

Maintenance Info

A few things about the structure of my blog…

Logo
I just changed the stock photo of a tunnel to a custom graphic. I was playing around with my initials and came up with a pretty clean logo that I liked… it almost looks like a flag!

Comments
I’ve added Disqus comment support for all future posts, and past posts that have no comments. Basically, anything that already has comments will continue to use the Wordpress comment system… until they allow importing of old comments into Disqus.

If you don’t know what Disqus is, it’s a way to track your comments across different blogs that use Disqus, and it’s also a way to self-identify. But if you don’t have an account you’re still allowed to post anyway… I made sure of that.

Lists
I’m still having a problem with both ordered and unordered lists on here. If you see something that looks funny and might be a list, please be patient. This theme didn’t come with support for formatted lists, and setting it up to do so is a little difficult (thanks Wordpress!).

That is all.
