You might be interested to know that there's two different kind of posts on this blog: "Thought of the Day" and "Normal". The "Thought of the Day" category is a once-a-day random tidbit, usually a funny video or picture, and the "Normal" is just what you'd expect from a blog like this:

Unicorn-Butterfly Soup.

Netflix Feature Request: “Follow”

Netflix, oh Netflix.  Will I ever stop loving thee?

As I’ve mentioned before, I not only love Netflix, but I also have what many would probably call an “obsession” with certain actors or directors… I’d prefer to call it “extreme favoritism for the individual in question’s genius”, but whatever.  Because of this “obsession” I have a habit of adding all the movies from the actor/director’s cinematographical history, and brings me to the point…

Heaven d’Video

Netflix Should Have a “Follow” Mechanism

If you’re like me and love how Sylvester Stallone plays the same role in all his movies, and want to see every one… you’ve added all his movies to your Queue.  But what if he comes out with a new movie, and you don’t keep an ear close enough to the ground to hear about it?

Stallone is a bad example, because his modern movies tend to have astronomical amounts of marketing behind them, but the principle is the same.  It can be very difficult to keep track of what movies your favorite actor, actress, or director is involved with, especially if they keep themselves very busy.

I Stole The Idea

The idea comes from Hulu’s “Subscribe” option, where you automatically get the newest releases from any given show added to your Hulu Queue.  Programatically, it shouldn’t be difficult.  Either there’s a nightly “oh crap, any new movies with [x]?” CRON Job that runs across the whole site, or a special script is run individually whenever new content is added.

What could it look like?  This.

Why?

For example, I only found out that Brad Pitt is in “Burn After Reading” a few days before it opened in theaters, and even then only because I keep an eye on a large number of blogs.  Not having TV and not going to the movies very often make finding information like this difficult, and I feel that this feature would be very useful to a large part of the Netflix customer base, given my previous thoughts.

This could work for directors, like Guillermo del Toro, or anyone else who makes it in the “Netflix name box” (see below).

Click for a version that makes sense.

The Plea

So, Netflix, please, pretty please, will you implement this feature?

I asked nicely!

Ender’s Game… The Comic Series

In case you hadn’t noticed, I’m a huge fan of Ender’s Game.  And Orson Scott Card.  As long as it’s not the Homecoming series.

They’re apparently making a movie, but OSC is taking his time to write the script to be perfect.  Since alot of the book takes place inside Ender’s head as thoughts or inner dialogue, that obviously wouldn’t translate well to a viewing audience.  So the movie’s going to be awhile.

It’s kind of like my Bible.

But imagine my surprise when I realized that a comic book series is coming out, based on the novels.

Fantastic!  I usually don’t buy single comics (I prefer the trade books), but I’m definitely picking these up as they come out.

I’m just that much of a fan.

Come Again, Netflix?

Apparently me wanting to investigate “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” isn’t supposed to be easy.  See if you can follow the logic on this one.

First, I get an email saying Disc 1 is going to ship from Phoenix, AZ.  I didn’t really give it much thought at the time.

Then I get this email today, saying it’ll be here on Monday.

Monday?  Really?  What happened to “Next Day Shipping”?  I didn’t realize that your promises to your customers had a geography clause.

I had previously wondered what happened if a disc in the middle of a series is missing, like “Stargate: SG-1″ has a few “long waits” at the moment.  Here’s what I had found.

So I have a question for you, Mr. Netflix.  How can you be intelligent enough to not ship a series when it’s not fully complete and waiting for me, but you’re not intelligent enough to not ship something when it’s “too far away” (geography clause!) to be here on the normal schedule?

Right.  Because that makes alot of sense.

Update (9/25/2008 3:15pm PST): I just got off the phone with Customer Service (no hold times or phone menus!), and they supposedly have a system in place that looks for these sort of things.  They didn’t comment on the “Next Day” geography clause, but instead said that they usually don’t remote-ship things if it’s approaching a weekend.

They apologized, and are supposedly shipping out a “Bonus Disk” from my Queue tomorrow.

Hopefully it’s one that’s local and won’t be here next Wednesday.

Update (9/29/2008 9:00pm PST): The disc isn’t here yet!  Just kidding.  I got it on Saturday, and was very surprised that it all went down so smoothly and properly.

Thanks, Netflix, for being awesome.  This is why no-one goes to Block…who?  anymore.

Thought of the Day- Avenging Angelo

I love Stallone.  And you can always tell when he’s involved in the writing, even if he’s not listed.  What I call “Stallone humor” - dry, weird, and totally deadpan usually with an obscure one liner - shows up.  You see it alot when he writes the movies themselves (Rocky and Rambo, for example)… but it comes up elsewhere.

Avenging Angelo is a good example… it’s a mafia movie that’s a little tongue-in-cheek, and Stallone adds his parts.

Three great examples:

  • “Welcome to Cooking with Frankie, Brought to you by Baretta” [Stallone hits clam shells with the butt of handgun and gun fires] / “ARE YOU CRAZY!?!” / “Yeah.  Just a little.”
  • “Now you listen to me, Mr. Mafiapants!” [to Stallone]
  • [fart sound from a decomposing dead body] / “What was that?” [to Stallone] / “That?  Well.  You’ve got a squirrel problem.” / “Squirrels?” / “Yeah, squirrels.  You see, they’re beefing up for the winter, eating alot, but they like to be warm and so they get inside the walls.  But then they eat too much and can’t get out because they’re stuck… so they have to, you know… deflate.” / “Oh.  Ok.”

Thought of the Day- Viking Movie

Apparently they’re making a Viking movie… where some guy crashes from outerspace and goes dragon hunting.  It sounds stupid… but looks awesome!

No funeral pyres today, my friends!

If I could make a suggestion to the producers… you can’t have a movie like this without Dethklok.  Not in today’s world, especially after having intro music that sounds eerily similar.

p.s. I’ll be at Mayhem Fest all day in Mountain View… aren’t you jealous?

Thought of the Day- Wanted

[this is really a "Thought of the Day For Yesterday", which gives me an excuse to post another one later tonight]

I saw “Wanted” yesterday. It’s billed as an action/wtf movie with lots of cool action sequences, and alot of reviews actually compare it to the wtf-factor and gasp-rating of the original Matrix.

But, um, it’s not anything like that.

I won’t spoil anything… I just want to say two things:

  1. Angelina Jolie is super hot, as always. And, as expected, we get a naked look.
  2. I walked out undecided, and still can’t decide, as to whether it was a “really amazing movie” or “really totally craptastic”.

Thought of the Day- Rob Zombie

There’s apparently a movie coming out called “Tyrannosaurus Rex”, which no-one knows anything about, by Rob Zombie.  Subtitled “51% Motherfucker, 49% Son of a Bitch”.  Knowing (and loving, in a platonic way) him like I do… I’m going to go with “HOW AWESOME IS THIS GOING TO BE!?!?” as my pre-trailer/pre-info review.  Right?  Yeah.

If you don’t know much about him and his personality/insanity, check out his YouTube Channel.

I’m not even joking.

“The Dark Knight”

Holy mother of all that is evil… “The Dark Knight” looks amazing.

I saw the first real trailer today (attempted to see ‘10,000 B.C.’ but left and got a refund), and I cannot even express how impressed I am. With a trailer. I’d link to it, but seeing it on YouTube or other low quality doesn’t do it justice… you need to be sitting in the dark to truly experience it.

When it first opened with the “Legendary Pictures” symbol, I just assumed it was another preview for the ever-stupid “Iron Man” or something… and then the bat symbol came on. There was a moment where the audience audibly didn’t make any noise… out of anticipation? Out of respect for Heath Ledger? Or both?

If you’ve read any of the writeups for the upcoming movie, then you’ve heard The Joker (by Heath Ledger) as “terrifying” and “amazing”… this falls short of truly describing the impression I got from the 90 seconds of video.

The Joker

Obviously, The Joker looks like Heath Ledger. But the clown makeup isn’t applied nicely like in the comics or the other Batman movies (or TV shows, for that matter)… it’s applied in a manic, sloppy, “I’m insane” way, and is somehow subliminally very scary.

He talks like a mix between Al Pacino’s gangster persona and Hannibal Lecter… with alot more “crazy” thrown in the mix than you ever saw with Hannibal. “Because to them, you’re just a freak. Like me!” is one of the creepiest lines I’ve heard in a movie since Hannibal’s infamous “Hello, Clarice”.

He laughs like a demonic hyena, something that actually reminds me of … myself.

The facial expressions are probably one of the biggest parts of the role, from what little we’ve seen: a heady mix of disengaged arrogance and what can only be described as “someone who is not accustomed to interacting socially with others”.

Why am I so excited about The Joker? It’s simple: he adds a layer of darkness, insanity, and evil to this movie that will escalate it’s status, spice up the story, and make it far more twisted than the already-dark comics were.

As a sequel, this had the potential of being cheesy and cliche, sort of how the Spiderman series has become… I think with the presence of The Joker (along with other still-developing characters like Twoface), we can safely assume this will not be happening.

For more details on some of the minutiae of the film, check out the NY Times’ very long, and good, behind-the scenes.

Or go see an action movie… just to see the previews.

New Harry Potter Movie

Here’s the first videos I’ve seen related to the upcoming (hopefully soon) Harry Potter movie…

I really only have to things to say, in addition to sharing this link:

  • This movie has the potential to be really great, or really terrible, moreso than any of the other ones. This is the darkest story yet, but has alot of side-action going on (I won’t ruin it if you haven’t read the books). Let’s just say that if it’s done right, people who love the books and hated the movies so far will probably change their mind.
  • “Hermione” had better keep being herself, completely opposite of those edited movie posters… if you know what I mean. *wink*wink*

Why ‘Heroes’ Is Better Than Any Movie(s)

Heroes: the show that came out of nowhere has gained huge popularity on NBC based on a comic book-style narration… even with non-geeks. It’s better than any other action/drama TV series (past and present), and is better than any movie series (even those based on comic books) will be.

Length/Continuity

Movies typically adhere to the standard format: intro, body, and conclusion. Even if room is left for a sequel, almost all of the storylines are completed and tied together by the end of the 2-3 hour saga. Heroes doesn’t do that.

Season 1 was considerably longer than a movie, and even if Season 2 is cut short due to the awesome strike, it will be as well. Why is this important? Having a huge amount of time to tell your story, as long as it’s a good one, benefits everyone. Plus, when you don’t have to fit an entire story (including a “happy ending”) into a specific amount of time… that leaves many options open.

Heroes
It’s the reason some people get up in the morning.

Characters

Heroes, as I mentioned before, is in the style of a comic book. For the uninitiated, this means that there are many characters being dealt with throughout the long and twisted plot, any of which may become the focus for any amount of time… or the writers may decide to bounce back-and-forth in tandem between a handful.

Movies don’t do this. There’s really no reason I can think of as to why, other than it’s the way things have always been done, and it’s a proven format. God forbid you do something new. Even the Spiderman movies predominantly follow one character (Peter Parker/Spiderman).

Reading… But Better

What it comes down to is that Heroes is like reading your favorite SciFi books or comic books, but with much more action and realism than you could ever make up in your head. George Lucas understood this when he made the Star Wars movies: a continuing story without a specific end is very attractive. It leaves the viewer wanting more.

Nerdz
All your base are belong to us.

Heroes will eventually have to end, since NBC cancels all the good shows anyways (The Black Donnelly’s anyone?), but all signs point to this lasting at least a few more seasons.

Character Types

All the other factors aside, there is one overwhelmingly important piece that makes the show so successful: the characters themselves. Whether or not the viewer likes certain characters, each one is realistic and true-to-life (as much as such themes of superpowers allow). The world is believable, as it is, for all intents and purposes, our world.

Every small boy (and maybe some girls?) wishes at one point that they have superpowers… there’s some people who don’t grow out of this. The idea that “average people” wake up one day and have powers, and apply them to a good vs. evil battle in a world much like ours, speaks to that same part of us.

Don’t Be Like Lost

For all it’s strengths, many viewers think the first half of this season was fumbled: tangential stories about Claire’s love-life, a multi-episode journey into ancient Japan… it wasn’t what was expected. But the writers apparently knew what they were doing, because with that slow setup, the series stands to have some of the greatest episodes yet.

Storm
It’s just not the same…

I hope that Heroes doesn’t turn into Lost…. I was a big fan until I got tired of all the boring drama/inaction and random nonsense. So far, we’ve seen a good tie-in of all the characters and plots, even if they don’t have definitive beginnings and ends.

Let’s keep it that way, and without any mechanical-but-alien-and-smoke monsters.
